And welcome to the journey. The Summer 2010 journey. I know that you're already supposed to be getting tattoos and sending me pictures of them or whatever it was that I said in the last one, I don't remember. Well I still want you to do that, BUTTTTTT I also think it would be cool if you happen to have any Lord of the Rings books if you could scan them and send me the pictures. That would be cool because I (and someone else I know) compulsively collect every copy of the LOTR we come across in every thrift-store. I certainly don't need any more copies, but that doesn't seem to matter. It's like I don't want them, but I don't want anyone else to have them. Also I feel like I'm saving them from being used as firewood or something, and giving them a home where someone cares about them. Like orphans. Tolkien's orphans. Annnnnnnnnnyway, I thought it would be neat to make a book that's nothing more than a collection of LOTR covers. Because LOTR covers are - if they are anything - diverse and numerous. They range from beautiful covers done by Alan Lee or Tolkien himself, to weird psychadelic landscapes and Aragorns with huge, white feathers coming out of his hat, like an even gayer Robin Hood.

So I've already told the fan club, but now I want to tell the "world." As you probably know I enjoy collaborative book projects. The current book I'm working on is about tattoos. Basically all I need from you is:
  1. your first name (at least)
  2. a picture of the tattoo (don't worry about it being really high quality)
  3. the story behind it
  4. the pain it caused on a scale of 1-10
  5. and the location (in case I can't tell from the photo)
There! It's that simple. Just email all that stuff to earthvssoup@gmail.com.

Now, here are some pictures from my summer thus far:

Today I graduated from Austin Peay State University with a BFA in Art. So now I'm going to have to start charging more for my stuff.
Also, I was the guest speaker at a comic book convention the other day. It was a great opportunity to talk about my work with Proton Penguin and to meet some of the fans that haven't yet joined the OFFICIAL fan club, The Penguineers. Anyone reading this who is not already a member -there's probably at least one, right? - can join simply by sending an "electric mail" to earthvssoup@gmail.com. It's free, and easy, and you'll get a "special" medallion. You'll also receive newsletters and "access" to "exclusive" interviews with me.

Here are some pictures of me with a few fans, official and unofficial, at the convention.

It's been a busy week, what with this flood and all. I've gotten a ton of stuff done that isn't Proton Penguin related AT ALL. More like stuff that's related to my real life. I made a CV, a new resume, and some other stuff I can't remember right now. So for those of you that are counting, that's 3 or 4 things. Oh yeah, I got a portfolio on behance.net.

There's no Penguin stuff on there...yet.

And here is a picture of me with fan #003. I'm the excited one on the right.

Comic Pages - Issue #1

This is "Proton Penguin" issue #1. It was released in a black and white limited edition of 10 at the b-squared artist's group show, "Shampoo. Rinse. Repeat." on February 4, 2010. It was also part of a much larger book all about how to survive a nuclear war that I made for my senior show on April 26, 2010. There is only 1 color copy.

Comic Pages - Issue #0

This is "Proton Penguin" Issue #0. It was released on 4/26/2010 and was given away at my senior show. There were three printings of this issue. The first printing was a series of 10 which were hand-bound by me using a Japanese 4-stab binding. The second printing was a series of 20 which were just stapled since I got tired of hand sewing them pretty fast. All of the second printing were given away the night of my show. The third printing was a series of 20 which were also stapled.

Greetings Fellow Penguineers,
There is exciting news in the Penguineers' camp. The creator of Proton Penguin was recently spotted at "The Coup" in Clarksville, TN signing copies of his limited release Issue #1! The turnout was less than favorable (one person). ((thanks, Soph!)) Anyway, your special "medallions" should be in the mail shortly along with your official acceptance letter. Below are some pictures of the event. Photos courtesy of Russell Royer.

In other news, John-Michael is hard at work on issue number 2! There are going to be big developments in the Proton Penguin universe in Summer 2010. Trust me, It's a good time to be a member.

Sincerely,
President John-Michael Perkins
